This online foundation course covers the theory and practice of facilitating group conversations with visual art or complex imagery using the Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) method, with a special focus on how VTS can be used as a therapeutic tool in (health) care or psychosocial support settings.

The course is particularly relevant for therapists and social care professionals, who want to learn more about how art engages the social brain and how the different VTS techniques can be deployed to support specific cognitive functions as well as emotional and social wellbeing.

The course is taught in 6 weekly 2-hour online sessions, and consists of lectures, group discussions and practice, guided by individual coaching.

By taking part, participants will:

  • Learn about the historical and theoretical framework of the VTS method.

  • Develop practical skills in the basic techniques of facilitating group conversations around visual artworks and complex images with the VTS method.

  • Gain insight into how art engages the social brain and how VTS can be used as a therapeutic tool in (health) care settings.

Upon completion of the course, participants will receive a Certificate of Training and a VTS handbook with the covered theory and techniques.
